Area Guide to Gibraltar

North District

This area of Gibraltar is the new up and coming location and is centralised around Devil’s Tower Road. The newest residential development in this area built in 2010 is Filomena House which is a very popular building for first time buyers.

A hotel is also planned to be constructed adjacent to Filomena House in the near future which will offer local conference facilities when built.

In addition to this, other residential developments located in this  area include Sunrise View, Wellington Court, North View Terraces, Shackleton House and Carltree House to name a few.

Amenities in the area include a local supermarket, building merchants and wholesale suppliers. Eastern Beach with its cafés, bars and restaurants is close by and the Town Centre and the Spanish border are only a ten minute walk from Filomena House.

Ocean Village Marina

Marina Bay features some of the most exclusive residential developments in Gibraltar as well as restaurants, nightclubs and the Gala International Casino.

Being within walking distance from the airport and the border, and just a stone’s throw away from Casemates and its main bus station, this location is very convenient and at the same time it retaining all the charm of a luxury holiday resort with modern high-rise buildings, roof gardens, gymnasium and swimming pools.

Residential developments in this location include, for example, Marina Court, Marina Bay, Portland House, Neptune House, Tradewinds, Watergardens and Ocean Village.

The Ocean Village Complex is the predominant development in this area and comprises three residential tower blocks and a series of Mews townhouses, all of which benefit from the Ocean Village promenade offering a fine selection waterfront gourmet restaurants and branded shops.

Leisure Island is the hotspot for local nightlife where clubbers can dance the night away. Its stylish Business Centre skyscraper hosts high-spec office space, some enjoying 360° views.

In addition to the residential developments, there is a large selection of commercial office accommodation due to this area being the main commercial hub in Gibraltar. The local Port, the Gibraltar Bus Terminal and Saint Bernard’s Hospital can also be found in this area. Morrisons Supermarket is the predominate gateway to this thriving part of Gibraltar and there are also a number of cafes and restaurants located nearby, along with a gym and fitness studio.

Town Centre

The Town Centre is admittedly the most convenient place to be and is in the heart of Gibraltar for culture, local food and business activity. The Town Centre is in fact the epiCentre of the old city located behind the historic city walls which was once all that existed of Gibraltar before the extensive land reclamation works started.

Due to the heritage of Gibraltar, most if not all of the residential apartments and houses in this area are located within refurbished or privately maintained colonial buildings offering characterful living accommodation when compared to the modern developments.

The Upper Rock is also included within this area and which is an extension of the Old Town with the main distinction that the views from this area can be spectacular. On clear days you can see the distant coastline of Africa which can sometimes be a breathtaking sight!

There are many local amenities in the Town Centre which include local convenience stores, restaurants, English pubs and the main high street retail shopping district on Main Street.

Queensway

Cormorant Wharf, Ragged Staff Wharf, The Sails and Queensway Quay Marina are the predominant buildings in this area offering a quieter side to Gibraltar life. These residential buildings are situated around the “old marina” when compared to the newer Ocean Village marina and lifestyle option. Two very different locations!

Queensway has a hint of salubriousness about it which may be from the colonial vernacular architecture, established restaurants and bars or from the tranquility of walking along the water’s edge..

This area is very popular and due to the prestige location and lifestyle it offers whilst remaining very convenient to access the Old Town which is only minutes away.

South District

Suitably named for being at the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, the South District can be described as the most popular residential area in Gibraltar with an extensive range of apartments and houses to suit all tastes and pockets. Most properties can boast truly spectacular views of the strait of Gibraltar and the African coastline.

Due to the focus on residential accommodation in this area, there are limited amenities to offer local residents although this is something you compromise on due to the tranquillity of the area.

Popular developments in this area include The Anchorage, Clifftop House, The Cliftons, Rosia Plaza, Vineyards and Brympton to name a few.

Being a residential area, the South District benefits from local schooling facilities including the Loreto Convent and St Joseph’s school, and most places are only a short walk from the beachside resort of Camp Bay and Little Bay which are very popular bathing destinations during the summer months.

East Side

East side is home mainly to Catalan Bay and Both Worlds. This area provides spectacular unobstructed views over the Mediterranean with Catalan Bay offering a very “village” feel to the visitor. Both Worlds is a residential complex offering retirement apartments to let and for sale. The Catalan Hotel overlooking Catalan Bay village is also a very popular destination with tourists flying into Gibraltar.
